TPS and Data Security etc etc

Just had a call from Homeguard Direct (yes those same people who call you up and allegedly pretend to be Sky to con you into parting with your cash)

they now offer "data protection services" basically they're saying that they can remove us from those databases that companies cold call from for £50. This way we won't get any more sales calls.

they also said BT charge £156 for the same service.

evidently we are on 85 of 150 of these databases which obviously is a high percentage and it any of this were true that that would explain why we get so many calls despite being registered with the TPS.

does anyone know any of the facts behind this so called service? who owns these databases and can I write to them myself to get removed assuming they do in fact exist.

Congratulations! By engaging with them on the phone you've now been added to yet another database which will be sold on and on ad nauseum. There's no way of knowing how many times these databases get sold, but of one thing you can be certain: they are shysters who have no respect for the TPS or anything else which would curtail their activities. They are usually operated from abroad so are outside any UK registration or legislation anyway.

The best way to stop nuisance calls is to get an answering machine to screen your calls but if you do answer just put the phone down on them, or even better claim that the person they are wanting to speak to is dead.

Or claim that they've called a brothel and offer them a discount if they book now and a member of a certain political party :)
  • i usually give them a lot of verbal and aggressive abuse down the phone, because they usually put you on a "blacklist" of numbers not to call
A man's own hand is most to be trusted
  • Buy an answer machine and put this message on it:

It is actually 21 secs long before the "beep" - I have NEVER had a cold caller last the course ! Strangely, many genuine callers comment and say how good the message is......

I told them I wasn't interested, even if it was genuine I wouldn't deal with those people anyway... I'm just curious...
