New PC

  • I've seen Dell PC's with a core II duo cpu, 2gb ram and 19" monitor for £329 - at that sort of price you're hard pushed to beat it - especially when you add on the cost of a legitimate copy of an OS ;)

The £329 D06E02a/D06E02aXP deal is beatable too. You could build a PC with the same specs as the Dell's D06E02a/D06E02aXP for £314 (£199 to match the specs of the D06E02 + £15 for an extra 1GB of memory + £100 for a 19" TFT monitor)

There's even no need to travel to Computer Village to make the self build with an operating system cheaper than the Dell PC. With Ubuntu/Linux being as good as Windows for everything apart from gaming, there's very little reason to spend any money on an OS for a non-gaming PC.
The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.

I agree in general about the use of linux but most people have been weened on linux and for some trying to get certain things to work (wifi cards are a prime example) can be trying.
