    I think it's under 14 or 15k.... not 100% sure.

Have you tried https://www.entitledto.co.uk to see what you may be able to get?

My friend looked it up last night (I thought he was entitled) and the website said for a single person, it's under £11,700.

Job Centre told me different, though, but that may be because I didn't work the previous year when I applied...

It is under £11, 700. But if you live with a partner (or someone of the opposite sex, even if you're not "together" annoying law I discovered a while ago!) it's less as both your earnings are taken into account (I think it's around £15k between you, but check at the job centre for advice)

That's wrong, it's only if you are together as a couple. If you're not a couple (i.e. two friends sharing a house, or a lodger or anything) then you DON'T need to claim as a couple.

When I was flat sharing with a guy a few years ago (who was gay, incidently!) he was told he couldn't claim because he was living with me. Perhaps he was informed wrongly, or the rules have changed since then, but it's definetly something to be aware of.
My ex-boyfriend also had problems claiming unemployment benefits because he lived in the same house as me (even though there were two other people unrelated to us living there as well)
