BT Phone rental

Was looking at my mums phone bill and noticed she is paying (£1.16 a month) for phone rental. She says this is because if you hire a phone from BT they will come round to investigate internal line faults FOC otherwise there is a big charge. Anyone know if this is true?
If so is the router supplied by BT the same? Seems like something she should cancel especially as I don't think she even has the actual phone anymore, seem to remember it died several years ago and got binned.

My father got a decent sized refund when i spotted the charge for phone rental on his phone (he hadn't used the original BT phone for years). Ring them. I'm no expert but I don't think it allows you to get 'free' service if your line develops a fault - the service will be free if the fault is no fault of your own anyway.0

All it will cover is a replacement handset if it should fail-which she's already paid for many times over. Why bin a rented handset that they would have replaced for free?
It will not cover faults on internal wiring or extensions, so cancel it. They will not ask for the handset back unless it is a current one.
The router is free with your broadband, but it does not give you a free internal fault repair service! No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Cheers for the replies, I think when the handset was binned it was completely overlooked that she was renting it or she would have got it replaced. Interesting on the refund, I will give them a call and see how we get on.
