after having trouble with my new (9 wek old) dell inspiron 6400

i now require a new LCD screen for the laptop
the problem being the difficulty in speaking to people in India
then trying to arrange the aftersales/care required

whilst the laptop is still in the guarantee period, i was offered first for someone from dell to come out to me and replace the screen at home
which i thought was very decent of them as i did not want to send it off for collect and return etc tec

but the annoying thing was i was then asked to speak to the line manager
who then went over it all again, but tried to get me on the collect and return option

not only was i not having this this option, but i was getting kept on the phone for no reason

has any one else had dealings with Dell for aftersales/servcing etc

Ive had to get my laptop repaired which was only 2 days old and i guess im just lucky as the fella i spoke to was really helpful and arranged a replacement for me and even gave me a free upgrade, it was all sorted out over the phone, only took 1 phone call from me, he did run some checks over the phone to see if they could identify the problem, but in the end with it being new he offered to replace it.
    loops :)

Best to phone them in Ireland during office hours.

Ok i found this Ireland sales 01204 4444 you could always ask them to put you through to helpline in Ireland or ask for the number.
I used this number 01344-373727 instead of the 0870 908 0800 number ,but i got through to a indian guy who had me jumping through hoops to fix my problem and it never did !
In the end i emailed them and a uk woman was replying .

You opted for the standard 1 year 'collect & return' warranty, hence the reason why they want to collect it and return it to you.

You may well have to run with that option - however i dont see that as being a 'problem with dell'. If you'd something from PC World you'd probably have had to take it back and wait a fortnight.

You can upgrade to a fully comprehensive warranty with Dell, even after you've purchased the machine - that way, in future you would get them calling out and repairing it onsite.

    Update

    Fair play to Dell :T :T :T :T :T

arranged on Monday night 6.30pm for someone to come out and replace the screen on my 9 week old laptop
while i had my douts about this service, the man came out to day and fixed my new screen on to the laptop:j :j :j :j

as for the cooment about me opting for the 1 year service etc etc

my issue was i found it very, very difficult to understand the guy from india
although like i said above he did arrange for a man to come to me rather then sending the laptop away etc

but the annoying thing was then his supervisor then tried to arrange for a collect and return, this was despite the fact that it had already been sorted

don't know what he was trying to do apart from getting me further rattled

but fair play to them reported Monday evening fixed Wednesday lunch time:T : :T :T :T :T

There's an online chat support service you can get to from the Dell online support website. I find this much easier than talking to India.

When I bought my laptop I didn't take out any additional service contract.
The hard disk failed after a year (out of warranty).
I bought a replacement from Dell and put it in myself.
I was then asked if I wanted a three year on-site and although I don't normally go for that it was quite an attractive price (at the time).

It was the best investment I've ever made - new mother board - new keyboard and new screen and still 18months to run.

    Cheers
    Don
