I'm looking to get a few jobs done around the house but the problem is trying to find someone that's not going to make a pigs ear of it or rip me off! I've not heard anything good about rated people to be honest, does anyone have any idea what uk guild of handymen is like?

Never heard of them, but these profession guilds are often (always?) nothing more than a paid for membership, with no real assessment of work quality. Looking at the web site, it seems to be similar to RatedPeople etc.
What sort of jobs are they? Can you learn to do them yourself? Many people here are very helpful.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
I've only used Rated People once, a few years ago, to find a painter/decorator and all was fine. He turned out to be an ex - policeman and travelled a fair way each day to the job, most professional and thorough.
Don't know if I hit lucky or if things have changed since then.0 -
Can you get any recommendations from friends or neighbours? Ask around.0

It is best to ask around as dj.boz mentions. The multi-skilled handy man I use came recommended to me by a friend a few years ago now. He never needs to advertise & belongs to no special guilds or anything as he gets more work than he can handle just by being very good at his job & giving a great days work for a pretty reasonable day rate.
I'm currently on his waiting list for some fitted wardrobes to be installed along with some other jobs. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
The handyman I used to use was good, used him for all sorts of jobs for a few years then he started increasing his prices but his standards went down, last couple of jobs he did for me he ripped me off. Friends that recommended him are now feeling the same way.
Everyone I asks keeps saying they'll give me a phone number or pass my number on then I never hear anything. I've got a couple of jobs I'd like done over the summer so was hoping to find someone.

If you're on Facebook it might be worth asking on there. Either just post the question as your status (depends how many friends you have who may know someone local) or find a local Facebook group (e.g. a local buying/selling group) and ask on there.0

Has anyone ever tried word of mouth - you are much more likely to find a local trusted tradesman that way!
