A friend of mine is an ATPL who spends his Summers flying to popular holiday destinations and his Winters doing FEA work, of which there appears to be plenty.
Yes, experience essential, perhaps you could beg/steal/borrow some work experience at a small engineering firm and whilst you're on the airfield pick up some flying hours - maybe even get your FI rating as a means to getting free time towards a CPL/ATPL?
