Matched betting forum - who?

I keep meaning to start, I read the forum here and some others, just not quite got around to it. I doubt I'm going to retire off it, but there seems no downside as long as the rules are followed.0

Seriously though, just not sure why any partner would be concerned?
Just one of those things - she doesn't like the idea of it and we dont need the money. I didn't care enough about it to convince her otherwise so that was the end of it. No big deal.0 -
Could be a multitude of reasons, from pigheadedness and ignorance to traumatic experience with gambling. Even though matched betting isn't gambling if done properly, it's that 'if' that may be is difficult to handle for some, and they slip into gambling.
I would agree that, bottom line, it's not anything to get into if your partner is seriously unhappy with it.
I must be lucky then0 -
i did it a few years back, made a fortune ( or atleast i thought so...over £6k) really enjoyed it, but was finding towards the end that i was placing huge bets just to win £50, i took hubby away to Thailand for an all expenses paid holiday with the winnings ( i looked at it as a free holiday)
however i didnt have enough when i came back to start up again so have left it.
i would recommend it but i will say that you need to ensure you are very careful, do not do it if you think there is any chance it could become a habit, do not do it whilst tired or drinking, and be realistic on how much you want to earn.
I have no regrets, and would love to get back into it, but dont have the capital for a start0 -

Fair enough. Out of interest what is it exactly that she doesn't like the idea of?
We don't 'need' the money either but a car, holidays and other non MSE stylee spending later, all fears are allayed!!
Advantage play generally has put is in a much stronger financial position over the last 10-12 years (paid off debts, first house deposit etc.). Matched betting is not the first endeavour. Prior to this period I have to admit to having enjoyed the occasional flutter. That combined with a head for stats and being organised has helped us out significantly.
At present there's pocket money in it. Like any AP there's a profitability curve which diminishes as more people join the bandwagon and the source of your profits plug loopholes over time.0 -

mmm - to be pedantic the words bet and winnings are not correct here. matched bets (i.e. everything layed off) and profits are more appropriate.
you do need a reasonable bank roll to do this well BUT the profit is in turnover of offers with typically small profits per offer. A £50 profit for a single offer (excluding the more generous sign ups) is rare and gives a false impression of what this is all about. I don't have the stats but would expect per offer profit to be more in the £5-£7 ballpark. the nature of many of the bookie offers at the moment makes turnover a must.0 -
Yes, I think that's part of the reason for my delays - it's hard to get excited about a five or seven pound profit, even though it's for no risk and so on.0

Think it was the "betting" nature of it but to be honest it was such a non-event I didn't really pay that much attention. OH didn't like the idea and hence I forgot about it. I consider myself lucky with my OH in many respects so on the rare occassion when she doesn't want me to do something that unless I really care about it, its not worth making a fuss over.0 -

for 2-3 mins work? what's your hourly rate in your spare time?
100 x £5 =
1000 x £5 =
and so on.
what amuses me about discussion of this on the savings and investments board is that people are talking about annual interest or return in the 2-6/7% range depending on whether we're talking saving or investment. on my typical MB bankroll I'm estimating 150% return per annum. admittedly that isn't scaleable for those with mega riches but it's a reasonable chunk of change for those who want to make the most out of a few £K.
or should I open 17 vantage accounts or whatever they're called? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
argh thanks for all the replies - now my interest is piqued but I don't dare dip into the board until next weekend or the weeds will grow, the washing will pile up, and I'll end up looking like grizzly adams....0
