Realplayer - Deleting unwanted history files

Just been running AVG virus scanner and noticed a load of music tracks that I have accessed for ages. Done a bit of digging and it appears that every time I have ever played a track within realplayer it has created a shortcut. Now the shortcuts are only a couple of kbs in size but there are thousands off them. Just want to get rid of them all as although in size its not too much of an issue, it will speed up my virus scans as there will be several thousand files no longer needed to be scanned. Just wary of deleting odd files - am I safe to delete them? Is there a way to stop Realplayer creating all these backup files? Also there are a load of temp files within the realplayer directly - are these safe to be deleted? Am starting to think it may be best to uninstall realplayer completely and start afresh.....
