checklist when moving house

We should be exchanging this week so the confirmed date for completion should be given to us. Has anyone got a checklist of things that need changing etc?

Also may sound silly but the house we are moving to has separate gas and electricity companies. Can I stick with my existing company for fuel or do I have to stick with the ones already there to start with? . If not then would they just pick my meter readings up from the day I move in or will it take time to transfer them. Any advice would be appreciated .

If you're looking for a list of 'who to tell you're moving', I've posted one a couple of times on here. Just a minute, ...

I can help with this as we have just moved house. :) Our new property has the energy provider as Npower and I wanted to swap to the provider we have had for 20 years. So we had to call Npower and register with them over the phone, so we didn't end up paying the old tenant's bill.

So I phoned the provider we wanted to be with and they are going to take over our energy and let Npower know in the next few weeks. The whole process takes about 4 weeks. They said they will contact us by early August when Npower say they will close us down, and get meter readings... It's quite straightforward. Good luck!

NB: You MUST register with the existing providers that you want to swap FROM, otherwise your new provider (that you want,) will not be able to 'request' you as a customer...)

I would also say, when you leave your phone take a photo of the meters with something with the date on such as that days newspaper and do the same at your own home. It means if there are any problems/disputes over energy you can prove you were in the right.

    Enjoy your new home

This post doesn’t make a whole lot of sense

If you want to KEEP the provider that you are with NOW at your `old` house , all you need do , is take meter readings the day you move in , and provide them to your current supplier

You will receive letters to `the occupier` from the company’s that provided the services previously, but there is no need to call them to `register` or anything else

If you want to LEAVE the supplier/s to your old house , then you give them final meter readings on the day you move out , and take meter readings in your new house , the day you move IN , and provide those to the company that supplied the previous occupier

It really is, or should be, that simple

We wanted to Keep our provider so we
    1. Told them we were leaving our old property and supplied them with readings.
    2. Registered with the existing provider at the new property taking readings the day we moved in
    3. Told the provider from our old house that we wanted to move to them at the new house

As above it took about four weeks and the only annoying thing was that in those weeks before we could switch we were on about the worst rate you can imagine

I dont understand this , the `provider` is to the customer , not the actual property , so you didnt need to do step 2 ?

Yes this IS how it works; as I said in my post number 3. You DO have to register with the current provider at the new house, so that the electric and gas is in your name, and then your provider of the old property (the one that you want) can request you as a customer.

Dan-dan, your post (number 6) is more confusing than any other on here, and is also incorrect.

I called my provider who I have been with for many years, and they told me that I need to register with the existing energy provider of the new property. The new provider confirmed this too and so did my new landlord. Your preferred provider can NOT take you as a customer if you have not registered with the existing provider at the new property.

You cannot just simply take your preferred energy provider with you, unless they are ALREADY providing the energy at the new property. In the OP's case (and mine) this is not the case, therefore he HAS to register before his preferred energy provider can take over. If the new property has another energy provider, the energy provider you would prefer cannot just take it over, without you registering with them and your preferred company letting them know you want to transfer,

Yes they will send some bumf saying 'to the new occupier' but you will STILL need to register with them BEFORE your preferred provider can take over your gas and electric.

The information in Dan-dan's post is wrong.
