Forthglade Natural Menu Dog Food?

Options
Has anyone got any experience of using this product? I am considering ordering some for my very picky dog but as I've never heard of it before, I am slightly apprehensive about ordering a load and then it not being any good!

Just wondering if anyone else has used this and would recommend? :)

  • Yup, I use it and it's great - they also make Wainwrights trays so you may already have used them before :)

I have used it before occasionally, especially when there were stock issues with Naturediet. It's a very similar food, but it definately wasn't as good ingredients-wise as Naturediet.

I would have a look at the ingredients to double-check, the ones I've found on Vet UK's website would suggest it's of better quality and on par with Naturediet, but Amazon still list it with animal derivatives (generally lower quality). Naturediet, or Pets at Home's version by Wainwrights, may be the better quality option.

The good thing about this kind of food though is that you can warm it - 30 seconds in the microwave really brings out the smell, it definately helped when my dog went through a fussy stage, and I often used it for sick or elderly pet rats to tempt them to eat too.
  • mmmmm ingredients look pretty good to me!

From the back of a Chicken & Liver one I have:

Chicken (71%), Liver (5%), Brown Rice (4%), Salmon Oil, Seaweed, Minerals, Vitamins, Herbs, Glucosamine, Chondroitin.

  • Thanks for the replies! :D Glad to hear that others have used it and had good experiences. The listed ingredients seem pretty good too so I'm gonna give it a try for a few weeks and see how Mrs Fussy takes to it!

I like the microwave idea as well, should come in handy when she inevitably turns her nose up at it :p

These were the Amazon ones (seller being Forthglade themselves) that made me query it (and they seem to have the newer images on the item, not the old black sleeves)
Meat and animal derivatives (min 55% chicken), derivatives of vegetable origin and minerals.
  • Do you think I might be better off ordering it from VetUK then? I can't imagine they'd be different products as they're the same packaging but I don't want to risk getting something that isn't as good quality.

We used to use NatureDiet but they had some problems a while back and I read quite a few reviews where people said the food was off before it was opened, so I stopped using them. If NatureDiet is okay again though, I would probably consider using them too.

Also, I read that this isn't actually a complete food so am I right to assume that I should be feeding some biscuit with it?

Ahhhhhh I was just going to reply to krlyr's post - they do 2 ranges - one is a complete food (which is the one I use) and the other is a complimentary food - http://www.forthglade.co.uk/products/

  • Have you got a Pets @ Home near you?

They sell the FG trays individually and it might be worth popping in and getting one of each of the various flavours to try before committing to a big order of it

Naturediet had issues after moving factories (someone fell in a vat or something, eek) and the seals weren't sealing properly - so packs were "blowing" quite frequently. I believe the issues are resolved now, though I feed raw now so don't really buy it.

Forthglade do various ranges. Natural Lifestage is a complete diet so fine on its own. Natural Menu is a complementary wet food, so not to be fed by itself.

The Wainwrights one seems to get good reviews and I haven't heard of any packaging issues, but it is a PAH-exclusive food I believe. They do often do 3 for 2 deals on it though.

Thanks for the replies! I'll make sure to go for the complete range :)

I don't have a P@H I can get to easily but I'm wondering if Forthglade might do samples so I might give them an email tomorrow and see what they say :) If not, it's not too expensive to make an order so I might just chance it and hope my dog likes it!

Someone fell in a vat?! Gosh! :O If the Forthglade doesn't work out I might give Naturediet another attempt and Wainrights too :) It seems to be a case of experimenting with my dog because I think she gets bored of the food if she has it regularly.
