Lenco radio with Ipod Dock

I've recently won a boxed Lenco radio with Ipod dock but as I don't have an Ipod I intend to try to sell it. It all seems unused and working (lights come on, alarm, etc.) but I can only get static with the radio.
I know it's probably a dumb question but does it need an ipod in the dock for it to work?

No you don't, is it DAB or FM, have you tried tuning it extending the aerial?That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Yes, it is FM not DAB and I had tried tuning in with the aerial but just static.
However lunchtime watching the Ashes finish I was getting so stressed I started fiddling again with it for a distraction and I've managed to get the radio to work. I've made a note of how I did it and will double-check again later.0
