No battery is detected - Dell Inspiron M5040

As the title says really! The battery icon has a red cross through it and, when I hover over it it says no battery is detected.

The laptop seems to work fine though.

Any ideas on what is going on and what I should do?

Will it run on battery? If not and you've charged it, it seems the battery is dead.

had this on mine some years ago try unplugging it and replugging back in if still no trying charging up if still no then as macman says is dead.

i ended up getting a new better 9 cell one of ebay for £30 odd which then took me upto 4hrs odd. reason my battery died quicker than the wifes lappy i kept leaving mine plugged in overnight because stuff i was running had to remain on for around 3 days at a time.
so bascially once you have charged you battery i would suggest disconnecting straight away it will live longer.

It is running fine on battery (i.e. it is not plugged in) so I am confused!

I have had this on a couple of computers and fixed by removing battery, plug into mains and start up, shut down, remove mains, put battery back in and start up. Usually seems to reset it.
