Refused exchange

I'm wondering whether a shop can 'legally' refuse me an exchange on the grounds of them having a sale and being too busy?! (This is despite there being more store staff than customers!)

I had a gift receipt for some items of clothing bought for my son and wanted to exchange them for something else. I also picked up numerous other items for both my children and myself as the store was having a sale, but was told I couldn't make an exchange due to there being a sale on and therefore they were too busy.

There was no queue at either checkout and by far more staff than customers.

I was so annoyed that i ended up not buying anything!

If the goods werent faulty/misdescribed etc then technically you're at the mercy of whatever their returns policy is.
