I have just purchased a windows 8 commuter and am really struggling. I tried a you tube guide to help, but it was too complex and 22 minutes long. I couldn't exit it and had to turn off the sound. There must be an alternative? Please help :o

Which browser were you using to view the Youtube video? What do you mean it was stuck, was it running in the background or stuck in full screen?

I'm just guessing here but it sounds like you were running the modern/touch interface which behaves quite differently to the usual Windows interface. If that is the case, I would recommend sticking with the desktop mode - you can get into this by clicking the desktop tile from the start screen when the machine starts up. In this mode, the PC should mostly behave like a Windows 7 PC including Internet Explorer which will launch in the desktop mode whereas the one launched from the start screen will be the different touch screen version.

Just bung Classic Shell on it and, hey presto, it will be just like your old XP/Vista/W7 computer.

Took them a little while to do it, but Microsoft published a training document which you can download. It's a PDF and you can download it from here.

PS: One way to exit most things in Windows 8 is the key combination Alt-F4.

Thank you both. I have actually returned it this afternoon. It was frequently closing down. When I googled the error code it seemed to be a problem with the drivers.

Jivesinger we posted at the same time. I had googled and found the alt & F4 option, but it didn't work. It may simply have been a faulty laptop. The longest it ran without shutting down was 24 minutes and the shortest time about about a minute and a half.

Windows 8 is incredibly difficult. I don't know how many times I've lost something I'm working on here. When that happens I've learned to hover on the left side of the screen, as that is where it is generally hiding.

If you're getting error codes then I tend to agree with your comment:

If you bought it new and it doesn't work, you should be able to take it back to whoever you bought it from so they can fix it, replace it or refund you.

I bought it from Tesco and they offered me a replacement or a refund. I took the refund.
