Our landlady occasionally has letters come for her here, ground rent and the like. She usually knows when they are due to arrive though, and will ask us if we could let her know when they do. We have a good relationship with her so we do pass on letters as soon as we can, it's no trouble, but I certainly don't consider myself liable for any fees she incurs if her post is coming here and I don't get them to her in time. Am I also liable for the late fees incurred by previous tenants not getting their post redirected to where they actually live? Course not.

For the life of me I cannot understand why landlords who try and play at the game look for someone (their poor tenants) to pay for their mistakes. All landlords both commercial and domestic should have their post re-directed. It is a cost of doing business. I have tenants on long term assured tenancies and I have to renew my divert annually. The Post Office only allow you to divert for four years, but I can show the mortgage statement and get around that rule.

In this case, the OP had got off lightly in losing a little bit on money over ground rents, but let it be a lesson to all property owners. Divert and lose nothing, do it on the cheap and risk not having any post.
