Re plastering ceiling

Hi I have some plaster on my ceiling that I thought was wall paper and I wanted to plaster over it

When I peel it off a layer of paper comes off with thin plaster and I am not sure if it is lining paper with plaster on top or the paper that lines the plasterboard

Either way the plaster comes off and it leaves the rough paper backing - would it be ok to plaster on this or do I need to put a new layer of plasterboard on the whole ceiling the paper left is brown

I would attach a picture but not sure how to on these forums

Why don't you ask a plasterer to come and look to give you a quote and he will tell you what needs doing.

Upload your picture to one of the picture hosting sites (I use imageshack - lots of others around), use that site's functions to generate a 'forum code' for your image. Paste that into a new post and your image will appear. Your post count may be too low to allow that to happen in which case just post the link deleting the http bit so that the forum software doesn't recognise it as a link and then one of us can put the missing bit back for you.

Apart from that (or in the absence of a pic) I agree with Phil - get some pro advice on your problem.

Imgur is a simple picture host too.

Sounds like poorly applied skim that has been pulled of the board when you removed the paper, but as you rightly suggest, without a picture it mere speculation on my part.

There used to be some textured paper that actually had plaster between two paper layers.
The paper was applied normally and the wet adhesive set off the plaster within giving a hard textured finish eventually.

Now that was a !!!!!! to remove.

    Thanks for the advice
You should be able to see the images as per the link above

You can see the plaster finish then I peeled it off and the plaster came off with some paper on it and underneath is the brown paper you can see - below that is the plaster of the plasterboard

If Pva is applied can I skim the ceiling with multi finish over the brown surface underneath ?

Looks Artex over plasterboard and when you've peeled the Artex off it's taken the outer layer of paper off the plasterboard with it.

Simplest solution is just to get it skimmed straight over the Artex TBH but thats not really a DIY job unless you are a spread by trade if you want a decent finish.

I'd still get a pro plasterer in for advice if it were me.

    Cheers

Yes I will get a professional plasterer for the job for sure

I have spoken to two on the phone and one says they can apply Pva and skim over the old one and the other one said they need to put on new plasterboard

I would rather go with the former as it is more cost effective as long as the skim does not come off in future

Thats the key issue and thats why you need a pro opinion based on what he finds on site. Its pointless PVAing and skimming artex if the artex detatches from the substrate later on and brings the skim down with it. The conservative approach (albeit a tad more expensive to start with) IS to overboard and skim.

I had someone come and take a look this morning and they said it would be better to overboard and take down the coving etc

They did say they could do it over the artex but there was a risk it may not hold

I thought after that if I peel away the artex everywhere as per my picture to leave the plasterboard brown paper could I not then just get it skimmed on top of that having applied Pva - that way there is no risk the artex falls off as it is already off and the likelihood of that brown plasterboard backing paper coming away is virtually impossible

I forgot to ask when they were here but will need to check with him again if this is possible

I agree with Ketstone, artex or similar over plaster board, and I would suggest that was done on bare plasterboard, not over skimmed board.

But this is where I disagree, if you are fetching the top layer of paper off the board by scraping it is secure. simply re skim the ceiling.
