I never knew that...backache

I got a bout of back pain again and was cautiously doing a very slow walk and a passerby told me to take some honey for it. He said I should just put some in a glass of warm water and drink it.

Felt sceptical about it, but thought I'd give it a try and ate a teaspoon of (Manuka) honey and a few minutes later thought "I could swear I'm feeling noticeably better already" and ate another teaspoon.

That was yesterday and today it feels noticeably better. Must go and have another spoonful of honey then and see what happens.

Just did a quick google and thought "Well, this is something we don't seem to have ever heard of in this country, but there are comments online about honey being used for muscle aches".

Anyone else tried it? What were your results either way?

    honey is natures own antiseptic.

Have a spoonful every day, whether your back is bad or not.
It is really, really good for you.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

There were some reports recently of research suggesting that quite a lot of back pain could be down to bacterial infections. Manuka honey could be fighting an infection.

Let us know whether it keeps working.

I can't comment on the honey, I've never used it but you are doing absolutely the right thing by going for a walk. Sitting or lying around with a bad back does it no good at all, you need to loosen up and keep moving.

Hope you feel better soon! :)

I too read that backache might actually be an infection so that maybe why the honey is effective.

Also spend periods throughout the day lying on your stomach on the floor and lift yourself up on your arms to arch your back. You can also try liffting your feet to for a bowl shape as this can help

Another thing I never knew then, ie that backache might be down to an infection. You learn something new every day.

Maybe I'd better crunch down on some raw garlic too, in case its an infection.

It seemed to come on after I'd overstretched myself and I've been putting it down to that.

LessonLearned = I'd be interested to know your experiences of this then either way.

What I saw on a YouTube video on this seemed to be "You can use any honey if you like", but I saw he took the precaution of using decent-quality honey himself (not supermarket cheapie).

I tend to regard supermarkets cheapest as being little more than liquid sugar (as those bees have almost certainly been fed a high sugar diet), so I use decent-quality honey personally (ie Manuka and/or raw organic).

Don't know if it makes a difference just which honey is used. I doubt it would for honey applied to wounds (as I've also read of sugar applied to wounds) but for other medical applications I'd want to use the "real deal" type myself.

Anyways, my back is feeling not far off normal at the moment.
  • Well..for what its worth ...two teaspoons more of my manuka honey a couple of hours ago...and..

I'm feeling very nearly back to normal now.

When I've had back problems before it's taken several weeks and several visits to the osteopath before I felt normal again.

To date this time round..its been one visit to the osteopath on Thursday and I was still standing frozen in pain at regular intervals if I was a little incautious about how I put a foot down or sat back yesterday morning. Since then..2 teaspoons of honey yesterday, then 2 more today and I'm keeping my fingers crossed/touching wood...but I think that bout is already well on its way.

I'll have another couple of teaspoons worth tomorrow and take it a bit cautiously for a couple of days and see how it goes, but I will certainly think it's worth trying again if I ever have another bout of back pain. Cautiously optimistic...

Wonders how LessonLearned is getting on..

    Hi Money

Not been able to try the honey. Haven't got any in the house at the moment and it was far too hot yesterday - I just couldn't be bothered to go shopping.

I will definitely try it asap.

As well as lower back pain I also have a "frozen shoulder" at the moment. I have booked a physio appt for Wednesday.

In the meantime I am doing some gentle yoga stretches and my "physio homework" exercises.

My back pain is ongoing - I fell off a horse as a teenager. The frozen shoulder comes and goes, same with my neck and elbow pain. It's all connected. I sound like a right old wreck:rotfl: Much of the damage has either been caused or exacerbated by caring for my husband - all that lifting.

I've learned the hard way that if I don't exercise I seize up. So my goal now is to exercise every day and build up the walking.

It is going to have to be slow but sure however I am determined to get myself in shape and be as pain free as possible.

Next time I go shopping I will buy some honey and although I have never tried it before I will definitely buy some Manuka. I have read good things about it.

I have also started taking glucosomine again and cod liver oil in readiness for next winter. I find they help with joint pain and help me stay more flexible.

Did you watch "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" the other day. Google for info if you missed it. Truly inspirational.

If those guys can get fit and healthy from their starting points then I certainly can.......I may be 20 years older than them but I am nowhere near in the state they were in when they began.

By comparison my journey back to fitness and full mobility should be a walk in the park. ;)
  • I did indeed watch that tv programme and thought what a difference in the before and after scenarios.

I have now got a rather_pale_ expensive blender I've had my eye on for literally years, but they weren't here in Britain anyway. A Vitamix and "you name it, its supposed to blend it", so I can see a lot of experimenting coming on.

I've been cautiously working my way through the superfoods mentioned in these "super healthy" type cookbooks recently. All in readiness for throwing into the type of recipes these Vitamixs are usually used for.

    Chia seeds - check...nice
    Baobab powder - check ....nice
    etc

    I'm getting there..

Just gotta work out how to make vegetable juices palatable enough and think that probably boils down to = throw in an apple and/or some tasty type superfood and I should be able to manage to drink my veg I think:cool:

I read a bit about this and what I read mentioned something about it being caused by the same bacteria that causes acne.

I have CFS/Fibro but also have PCOS and acne and suffer A LOT with lower back pain. Might pick up some manuka honey!!
