Can anyone reccommend free websites for a five year old struggling at school.

One that teaches phonics and the key words.

I agree with arthur - little legs LOVES it

as for phonics (my DD cant get her head around C-A-T saying CAT) the Usborn and Ladybird Reading Phonics books are GREAT.

The Book People have great deals on the sets

Hopefully a teacher will explain better than me but I would

    1) ask his teacher what you should be doing.
    2) Read to your child every night.
    3) Have lots of books in the house.
    4) Don't put any pressure on - Finland has some of the brightest children in the world - they don't go to school until 6 & watch loads of TV. Kids develop at different rates.
    5) Watch childrens TV together. CBeebies etc
    6) Try and point out letters & phonics in all environments (cereal packets, newsapers, road signs, adverts, shops, etc etc.
    7) Don'y worry.

CBBC is great for kids - not sure if they learn much phonics on it though.

He is only 5.....lads are always slower than the lasses especially with language. Any extra curricular should be fun.... I remember my eldest always happy but always behind at a very pushy primary where all the parents were choosing Universities in year 3!!! He very sadly said at the end of year 3 'I'm never going to be on the purple reading books' I said it didn't matter because he would be able to read and he had a great singing voice and the purple readers didn't.
He is now 17 doing 4 AS gces and got an A* at gcse in English and A at Literature......he was a slow starter just took time to rev up with the clever clogs in reception...He still has a great singing voice...
Speak to the teachers or teaching assistants for help if he is struggling that's what they are paid for they should have the key to his learning.

My DS learned a lot by watching his dvd's and other tv with the subtitles on. We always have them on as I have slight hearing loss from chicken pox and he picked up words he wouldn't know otherwise.

He only knows about 5 of the key words. Can't remember how to spell his name. Doesn't know phonics of what most letters are.

I'm not putting pressure on him just he likes to use the computer so I'm trying to introduce learning through play.

A mother said in Year 1 it's all work and hardly any play. So I'm worried how he will cope. At the moment the school doesn't spend alot of time in class with him. I'm wondering will it change next year. I know it's my job to do alot of the teaching and I do go throught the words, read books, play word pairs, e.t.c but if he's not getting much help at school I worry.
