How to reduce shine on the face

I don't have an oily complexion, however, I do suffer with shiny skin on my face.

I don't always want to wear makeup & even when I do, my skin is still quite shiny.

If I do wear makeup, I wear mineral powder foundation & generally a powder blush.

Any tips & advice on what I can do to combat the problem?

I use aloe vera gel before my mineral foundation. I carry a little corn flour in a sifter pot and at lunchtime when I feel my nose glowing brightly like a beacon I pop some on with a kabuki brush. It mops up the oil leaving me matt but since it is so finely milled it is transparent (cheap too). I am super oily though so need all the help I can get.

    Thanks for the advice.

Which aloe vera gel do you use & how much do you apply?

If I put it on without wearing makeup, is it still effective?

Also, where do I buy corn flour? I know I can easily get hold of a sifter pot.

Does the corn flour block pores?

    I am terribly oily.

I use pore perfection by benefit and over the t zone number over 7 matt creme (white tube) its shows a bit white when you first put it on and its quite thick n goopy but it works a charm once smoothed in.

They hold the shine at bay for several hours with a ELF HD powder top up at lunch

I use Clinique three steps but with moisturizing gel instead of the lotion as it is oil free. This has helped a lot getting the skin right before getting the make up right.

I am very sensitive though so have to stick to this brand.
  • Problem I find when using any product that is for oily skin, is that it actually dries my skin out too much.

I also have very sensitive skin which doesn't help.

Have a play around with primers. Loreal do one in a little lot around £10, it's got mixed reviews but I use it (and forced my DH to on a photoshoot) when I don't want full on foundation on. I have fairly dry skin so it can be difficult to balance sometimes between moisture and shine!

On recommendation from MSE a while ago I tried a powder by rimmel that controls shine for up to six hours, I don't find the translucent shade very good at all but the rest esp peach glow works well for me either on a bare face, with BB cream or full foundation. I apply it with a fat blusher brush to avoid caking and would avoid a pad for same reason. The Rimmel powder is one of the best I've used ever even luxury brands.

Finally in hot weather, setting sprays or just magicool or own brand cold water aerosols to cool the skin and prevent sweating.
  • A lot of the time I don't wear any makeup except for eyeliner and mascara. See need an item that's duel purpose.

I do fancy trying the aloe vera gel. Although I don't know which brand to try.

Which Rimmel powder is it Annie?

I buy aloe vera gel from Holland and Barrett (they often have 2 for one deals). I use slightly more than pea sized - it sinks in quickly and weirdly is not sticky on my face but it is really sticky on my hands. I use it with and without make up - it is part of my routine, wash face, apply aloe vera....

Corn flour can be bought in any supermarket (I use it in sauces too as a thicker or in gravy. it is much easier than using flour this was as it does not clump). it is sometimes called Corn Starch. It doesn't block my mahoosive pores because it is so fine.
I have tried milk of Magnesia too but although it worked it was super drying and I could not wear foundation over it as it looked cakey.

  • marrowgirl...do you use a moisturizer aswell?

I have been using Boots Simply Sensitve moisturizer with SPF, however, it does nothing to stop the shine.

Also, I know what you mean about Milk of Magnesia. I didn't fancy trying that as my skin isn't oily enough to merit using that product.
