Good evening all, what happens after you send off a V62 form? Just my Dad bought a car and the previous ownser gave him the V5C form but he then managed to damage it :doh::doh::doh::doh: before he sent it off so he sent of a V62 and I'm trying to understand the whole process and what happens etc better as he doesn't explain things well and I would like to understand it better.

1) How long does it take to get it transferred over?

2) Does the previous owner send anything off to confirm they have sold the car? or is there nothing the previous owner will do since he gave my Dad the V62?

3) Does the previous owner get sent a letter informing them of the persons name and address who are applying for registration? or just that "someone" has applied for registration of their previous car and to confirm they have sold it?

4) Will my Dad get a confirmation stating he is the new owner of the vehicle?

Most appreciate any input.

Dont buy a car without a proper V5C.

You send it off, They write to the previous keeper. Then a few weeks later you get the V5C. IF all is well.

Hope it goes well and doesnt come back as being written off, Requiring a VIC check or find out it shouldnt even be on the road.

  • Thanks for that. I appreciate it. I hope it goes well. Cant believe my Dad managed to accidentally destroy the V5C right after he got it almost and then had to pay £25 for a V62!!! Ahhh....so they will then write to the previous keeper saying are you aware someone is applying for ownership of your previous car? Will they also include my Dads name and address in that letter so the previous owner knows who is applying for new ownership or just that "Someone" is applying for registration? As was worried that the previous owners might think "ohh why doesnt it say my Dads name and address" rather than just "someone" has applied so wouldnt want them to get confused and then my Dad get in difficulty.

As I understand it..the vendor simply hands over the tear-off strip [V5C/2] to the buyer, obtains the buyer's name & address to be written on the main V5C..and it is the vendor who then sends the V5C to DVLA.

[IN the distant past, the vendor would hand over the registration dox to the buyer, and it was the buyer's task to complete and send off...not so nowadays]
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

alistairq is right - your Dad should never even have been given the complete V5C in the first place.

It is the seller/vendor's job to send it to DVLA Swansea after both the seller and the buyer have signed and dated it the bottom of the 2nd page - Section 8.

Your Dad should only have been given the little green part - section 10 - which is correctly called V5C/2.

This is all explained in the black bit at the bottom of page 3 - section 12.
