Hi, I have a maserator in my downstairs loo (maserator is next door in the understairs cupboard). It does not smell too great in the downstairs loo, does that mean i have a possible blockage or is it just normal due to our warm weather. Smell is not horrendous just a lingering yucky smell! Many thanks if anyone has any ideas or insights!

Its very likely gunk in the unit thats stewing. Find some macerator cleaners and follow instructions. It worked for us.We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Saniflos are neither sanitary nor much use as a lavatory. They are moderately good at flushing perfectly clean water.
Amusing - but way wide of the mark when it comes to a reasonable assessment of a Saniflo.
Just to take the quote (above) from keystone's previous post...........and link
Saniflos are sanitary and are perfectly usable as a lavatory, the problem is that the vast majority of them are mistreated.
They do what they are designed to do, quite adequately - mascerate and flush away human waste and toilet paper. The instruction book tells you this, as does the nice shiny label to stick on the toilet seat lid.
They are NOT designed to mascerate:- baby wipes (these are a major source of unblocking conventional toilets work for plumbers and Dyno rod !), ladies sanitary appliances, rubber birth control "appliances", cat litter, fat from the deep fat frier (NOT joking !!), Lego, plastic combs, bits of string/wool, rubber bands from the postman, mobile phones, etc, etc.
Then there are those who use the wrong model for the job in hand (sorry !). Several years ago there was a gentleman on MSE complaining that he kept having to have the motor replaced every couple of months. It transpired that he was using an "ordinary" Saniflo for toilet waste AND a washing machine outlet !!! I shudder to think what that combination did....... other than destroy the motor bearings. His so-called "plumber" was quite happy - at £250 a replacement motor.
I had one installed in 2006, my neighbour ( a builder) before that. Neither of us has had any problems with our machines.
If a Saniflo is treated correctly it is a cheaper and viable alternative to a conventional toilet with its large waste pipes.0 -
At our previous house, we created a downstairs loo with a Saniflow. It worked very well for years, was still working when we left, but we were very careful what was put down it. It didn't like 'cushion' paper too much and certainly didn't like it when I put a piece of kitchen roll down by mistake, but eventually it flushed away.0

Love them or loathe Saniflo's they do need cleaning periodically to keep things moving.
I have a few I have to look after and I have always used the Saniflo descaler / cleaner, you can use watered down bleach to aid descaling instead of the cleaner. Saniflo do their own product for use in their machines which costs about £20 for a 5L bottle of the stuff.
Sanicleaner other companies stock it including most Plumb Centres and plumbers merchants. You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
You can get a commercial model - the Saniplus for a few extra quid . . .
It is designed for hotels and its motor can deal with baby wipes and other forms of sani-abuse!I was going to put the name of my plumbing business here so you know what I do should I give out any advice plumbing wise - however apparently I cant do that - go figure!!!!!
New signature - I am a Plumber (I am just not allowed to tell you!)0 -

bit it would have been obvious that the text is a joke for goodness sake.

If you are going to quote me old son don't do it out of context as it's then you that creates the wrong impression rather than me. If you had included the
bit it would have been obvious that the text is a joke for goodness sake.
Cheers
I fully accept that YOU meant it as a joke but too many people don't get it that way, or even bother to read the whole thing. I think (from my personal experience) that Saniflos are a great device but they have a bad reputation given to them by (mainly second and third hand) ill informed comment.

Funny though. I bet myself a fiver that you would be the first one to respond to it. I won."My mate Fred told me that this bloke on MSE said......."

We have one connected to a kitchen sink at our workplace, it is only used to push the water up and over a doorway. I doesn't get used that often and it starts to get stinky when the water that sits in it goes stagnant.
When it is used often it doesn't smell at all. We have had it installed for about 6 years, and never touched it since.0
