Never flown from Istanbul but frequently from Dalaman

Most things are priced in Turkish Lira, Euros and Sterling, for those that are not there are self scanning machines, press the flag for your currency and scan the item.

Always paid in whichever currency I wish

there were no self scanning machines at Istanbul

Which Istanbul airport was it, Ataturk [on the European side] or Sabiha Gokcen [Asian side]?

Ataturk. The firm that runs the duty free there is called ATU and also has shops at Ankara, Izmir and Alanya in Turkey and Tbilisi, Skopje and Riga elsewhere

You can't ring fence Muslims - Things are no different in the UK, the only difference is that it's less obvious.
Your point noted but I disagree e.g. there's every chance of being violently robbed in UK and lots of other Western countries unlike in the Muslim countries I have visited where as I said, from my experiences, you won't be hit over the head but you'll still get mugged as it were.
