Most insurers have a profile for the people that they are seeking as customers.

    eg young drivers
    old drivers
    max ncb
    zero ncb

Those that fit the profile will get competitive quotes. Those way off the profile will get ridiculous quotes (so that the customer will take their business elsewhere).

If you get a quote you like from a company whose profile you fit, and ask a company with a widely different profile to match it, you are likely to be told that they can't because frankly they don't want your business.

Otherwise there's no point in there being so many insurance companies!

Try confused.com to see which companies seem most favourable for your details. Also try https://www.ecarinsurance.co.uk which was cheapest for me, and TPFT was cheaper than TP only.

All you can do is get quotes and more quotes :)

I suspect they also have daily targets so I’ve found better quotes late in the day

Sorry I couldn't help but laugh when I saw that. They obviously were desperate for a "sale" and willing to forgoe the cost of a phone call, but not £100. Don't feel bad - even though they didn't even have the common courtesy of apologising for not being able to match the quote, you'd probably have just got loads of hard sell off them - and he was probably phoning the next victim straight after to try get his comission :).
