what is the best paint to use for this? gloss, silk matt or other?

gloss worked well for me, plus ireplaced the handles and got some chrome ones from Argos which were extremely cheap

I got some silver handles from B&Q, individual price of £4 each but about £15 for apack of 10 if i remember rightly, Take an over sixty year old with you on a wednesday and get 10% off, they look good as well.

If you have an Ikea near you they do 6 handles or knobs for £1. I have a mixture of these in my kitchen they are brushed metal not plastic and they look fab - not cheap at all.
