Focus 57 reg instrument cluster failure

Just after some advice re: the cluster on my focus which died- initially engine ran with cluster dead then after switching off was immobile. Wanting to avoid the dealership I was advised by an auto electrician to send parts off for checking at BBA REMAN. Unfortunately they were unable to fix it as apparently the defective components are not made available to them from ford. I had no alternative than get the ford dealership to replace cluster. In all it has cost over £900. I see that this is not a totally uncommon fault. Where do I stand with this. Certain parts of a car I would expect to last, certainly considering its age nd low mileage, whilst other parts are naturally going to need replacing. I feel best part of £1k on a repair is excessive but to whom does the responsibility lie. I am considering taking this p with ford but was hoping for some input first.

Buy a new cluster off ebay?

£20 - £40 and similar to fit it.

Finding one with the correct mileage maybe an issue, But when your saving £800 who cares.
