Paypal query

Hi Guys - Not sure if I'm posting in the right place or not - but I'm hoping someone will be able to help me!

I've recently ordered something over the internet for £40 (not ebay) from USA (I'm in UK) and have since read some horror stories regarding items not being sent & company ignoring all emails from buyers regarding parcels whereabouts.

I purchased these items via paypal thinking that my payment was protected (using my debit card - not CC so I couldn't claim back from my bank)- but I have now read some horror stories regarding Paypal too! If it came down to me opening up a case against this seller to obtain a refund & the seller did not have the money in their account I have read that I will not get my money back - is this correct? I am now panicking thinking that I have made a huge mistake in ordering & wishing that I hadn't!

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please?

Thank You!

It may be worth posting on the eBay board as they will have more experience of paypal. Im not sure what their terms are.

At £40 your credit card would not offer any extra protection than a debit. You have to spend more than £100 before credit cards offer extra protection (under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit act).

However even that may not save you with paypal as the credit card will argue that paypal are the provider and paypal haven't breached the contract.

There's the possibility of getting the bank to issue a chargback (you can do this with debit cards), but again you paid paypal and not the seller so that may not work either.

Horror stories on many things on the internet.... Don't believe all you read.

    Paypal dispute timescales 45 days......

    Debit/Credit card chargebacks 120 days.....

Now which is best to use.

Where did you get the idea that using a debit card has no protection?
