5 weeks does seem like a long time but from where I am standing, I think you are getting it out of proportion. Whenever you set out to buy a house, there may be unexpected issues e.g your vendor could pull out at any time and you could have wasted money on surveys etc. of course, it is irritating but it is just part of the process. Maybe I have been hardened by experience of these things but a month of extra rent and insurance is not massive in the scheme of things.0

Tell me about it. We were meant to exchange today on our purchase, had the agent hassling us to get on and do it and to make sure to pay for CHAPS for same day deposit payment. So we rushed around on Thursday afternoon getting that sorted...
..and then nothing.
Then our solicitor emails to say that the other side no longer want to exchange today as they feel they need to discuss completion date between themselves some more!
They have been demanding a 3 week gap between exchange and completion ever since they accepted our offer at the start of April! What on Earth could they have to talk about on the day we're meant to exchange?
Fearing the worst I got on to the agent to ask what is going on - they seemed as shocked as we were and promised to call back. By the time she calls me back it's nearly 5pm. The vendors now feel they need FOUR weeks. Just like that. No explanation.
I was up for telling them we need them to stick to their original agreement, but my partner just wanted it agreed there and then so we agreed to that. Our solicitor tried to still do the exchange just after 5pm but couldn't get through to theirs, so it's all left to Monday now. I dread tot hink what else they will have decided to go back on by then.
It's unfortunate but there's nothing much that I (or OP) can do about it besides be willing to tell them the whole deal is off. If OP is anything like us they have sunk a fair bit more into the process than their vendors have. At least for us it is "only" an extra week, but the nail-biting weekend of not knowing what else may change is really getting to me. :mad:0 -
I m really sorry to hear that Grifferz and I really hope that your news is positive next week, the whole process can be so stressful. And Suebfg maybe your right and after a nights sleep I have a better perspective on the whole situation, but money is money and no one likes to have to pay out unnecessarily! Especially, for a property that will stand empty for several weeks whilst they go away, to be honest I would have rather completed before but as you said previously C'est La Vie! Good luck to all that are going through this process it is tough but thank you for all your contributions, it has been much appreciated.0
