Tesco address fail

Just tried to put in a wine order from Tesco - first time since moving to a new flat.

When we moved, we found that the address wasn't listed in the Royal Mail database, so we asked them to add it, which they did (almost immediately).

However, some broken websites, like Tesco.com:
  1. Force you to select your address from a drop-down list based on the postcode, with no option to enter it manually
  2. Don't update their database regularly from Royal Mail, so are based on outdated data
  3. Don't even allow you to put in delivery instructions for the driver

Now I can just about understand why they insist on using addresses from the Royal Mail DB, but if you're going to do that there's absolutely no excuse for not keeping your copy of the database up-to-date.

The worst part is that they can't even put in addresses manually via Customer Services - I was just told that the only option would be to raise a request to have it added, which could take up to six weeks to process.

What a bunch of amateurs.

If it's any consolation it's not just Tesco. It took me ages to put in an order with Thorntons as they kept converting my postcode to an address in Hertfordshire (I'm in Cheshire). I wouldnt mind so much if it was a new address but my house has been here since 1980!

Either they're mis-hearing the postcode your are giving, or if by post, the writing is open to misinterpretation.
Once a postcode is given, the road that comes up should be confirmed before adding either the house number or name.

So do you have any comment about my OP, considering that you say you work for Tesco?

I find it quite amazing that there are such basic flaws in the IT systems that the company is relying on to attract customers and generate business.

Neither, this was online...I'd enter postcode and get the correct address but then as the screen changed so did my address!

Not everyone has a road name in their address, I don't (and the farm has been here since 1840's)

Actually, I've found that this is both better and more stupid than it initially seemed to be...

If I try to change my address via the Tesco Wine By The Case website, I get the problem described in my OP.

However, changing the address on the main Tesco.com website works fine... and the changes are reflected in Tesco Wine.

    What a mess...

    Benjus:

Tesco has two on-line address systems - which can be different, though you will be warned if that is the case.

    1) Tesco.com for GHS, Direct (incl Wine), and Rewards.

    2) Clubcard - MCA

If you have moved, you can change '1' by going into the Food & Groceries section and logging into 'my account' - then 'contact details' - if you have problems with your address there the people to talk to are on 08457 225533 option 3

Having said that, you should be able to change it - as I have heard the advice given if your house no/name doesn't come up - on the initial registration - is to select the nearest one, then once 'registered' - change 'contact details'.
I think for 'security' it needs to be done be the named person, but is not an area I deal with.

Some people think that changing an address in 'my account' will change their Clubcard details - No. That needs to be done in 'my clubcard account' (MCA).
If you have any problem with doing that on-line, CC can do it for you (providing its in your name).

    ellay864:
    Did you 'confirm' the change?

    JCS1:
ha ha, yes as you say some post codes just give options for various names.
