Making bidders' id private

Having recently auctioned an item and had a someone contact my bidders to offer them the same item at a lower price (nice) I wondered if any knows how to make an auction 'private ' so to speak?

I've looked on ebay and for the life of me I can't figure out how you can achieve this.

When creating or editing the listing, on the 'Pictures and Details' page, there's a check box next to the duration to make the listing private.

What does it mean when an auction is private? Is it just that people can see your listing but not who is bidding on it?
