I'm thinking of ordering Ashampoo® Movie Studio to do some simple video editing. Anyone able to offer an opinion, please?

If you intend to buy anything from Ashampoo, it's worth downloading the free version of Burning Studio. You will then be bombarded with offers of huge discounts on their other products. Can't find 'Movie Studio' in their products list, though. Are you sure it's Ashampoo?

For the basics, windows movie maker is fine. If you're going advanced, have a look at lightworks which was open sourced a couple of years back and is professional grade.

I agree about trying Lightworks - we use that freebie at work and once you have got your head around it (it can be very complex) - it is excellent..

Indeed, it's far more professionally oriented than that Shoreditch toy Final Cut Pro - many, many very real movies have been cut on Lightworks, and it's purely that Avid won the marketing war that this has happened. There's also Quantel, but that doesn't have a consumer-grade version!

I would try out demos of different video editing products as some of it comes down to personal preference which one suits you better. What is the source of the video clips you're wanting to work with? A lot of the current camera and camcorders use AVCHD for video which some video editing packages handle better than others.

    John,

About 12 years ago, I purchased a Panasonic Camcorder which captured the video on Minitape(?) About 5 years ago, I had a rush of blood to my head and transfered the content (mostly my grandson on his bike and in the 'pool etc) to DVD's using a recorder, how I did it I will never know! I now have a TZ30 (AVCHD) camera and love the quality of the video but it does not get viewed (except by me) on my desktop.

So these hours of film has been sat waiting for me to do some editing and now I'm retired, I fancy doing a Steven Spielberg! Whilst I enjoy watching my grandson swimming up and down a 'pool for 30 minutes, I'm sure my family would like a shorter version of the same swim!

    Thanks for the advice.
