talk talk/bt

i am currently a talk talk customer but have just moved house. Talk talk tell me that to stay with them i have to set up a bt line, but bt require a 12 month contract with £70 to cancel it!!! Does anyone know if this is right? and any alternatives as i don't really want to go to bt now as this is really annoying. Does anyone have any suggestions of who to go with? i need phone and broadband.

Thank you

Welcome to the MSE forums Lalewis2.

Talk Talk, like BT and any other company now offering line rental, could pay Openreach to do whatever work is necessary - but, IMHO outrageously, they won't.

By all accounts, Talk Talk used to offer to pay the £18 'get out of contract early' fee BT used to charge those who broke their contract and, probably, that is why BT changed its T&Cs. Now, BT charges the lower of the outstanding 12 months rental or £70.

I take it Talk Talk won't pay that much!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Talktalk won't pay the £70 unsurprisingly. do you know of any alternatives to staying with bt? is there anyone that doesn't require a bt line?? If i do have to stay with bt am i best keeping the broadband with bt or going to someone else? who?

Others do offer line rental (although I'm not sure whether less than 12 months contract is possible).

However, I don't recommend using anyone other than BT for line rental - see the 'HERE' link in my signature below.

If you are not sure and want the most flexibility, go for Heinz's solution - the cheapest you can get for most flexibiility.

there are cheaper options then Heinz's solution but it really depends on what you need or do with your line.

Whilst other suppliers might offer cheaper line rental. They can and do block access codes like 18185. They also charge for caller display unlike BT who offer it virtually free.
