I owe tax credits back

Apparantly i owe £1800 in tax credits overpaid a few years ago. This was due to apparntly not letting them know quick enough about aq change (at the time my hours were low and i did occasional overtime. My hours increased in two stages until i became full time. I decided to wait until i knew for sure the hours had settled down to a regular contract. i then paid for this later when they told me i was overpaid over £2000. I have since paid back several hundred in gradual repayments. I believe i owe about £100 less than they think but thats by the by

My question is as i have been made redundant and my partner is going to be in the same boat in a few weeks how do we pay it back if we do not find work?

if you are still getting tax credits for this year, they will take a reduction from your current payments until they have got back everything you owe them !!
if you suffer financial hardship i do believe you can ask for a longer time to pay it back...
    good luck !!

so surely i wont be able to claim tax credits as of when my partner also becomes redundant. I assume we will just have JSA to live on. Wont my tax creds just get cancelled?

I dont think they will cancel your tax credit debt, it will still be there when you and your partner find another job, you will probably need to claim again at some point in time so maybe give them a ring and ask to agree on another payment plan :)

My current tax credit claim will have to be stopped surely if neither of us are working. It wont carry on until next April regardless will it?
I understand my debt will still be there when one of us returns to work.
