Why does that remind me of a joke from the Two Ronnies (or similar vintage)
"What do you know about Buddha"
"Tastes a lot better than margarine!"

Will catch up properly later when I'm not at work!

    Good Evening :hello: (again)

Right. Who thought an idle thought about what to have for dinner could...............:D

Um, well thanks Beanie first of all, because some of the images in the link were what I mean by a Buddha bowl, others were not.....

It is about what is in the bowl and not the bowl itself. Whilst I am sure you can pay good money for a bowl with a hole in it (?), it's Mason & Cash xmas pudding bowls all the way in this house :D Which means I get extra brownie points for using them on days other than 25th December :money:

My understanding of the Buddha bowl concept is that Buddhist monks are dependent on alms/gifts/offerings from others to eat. Therefore, their bowl will be filled with a selection of things. The Dalai Lama was interviewed on Rick Stein's India programme last week and he kind of confirmed this because he pointed out that monks have to graciously accept what is given, whether they like it or not.

So, the 'westernised' version of this is a bowl/dish that contains the following; A grain, a vegetable (or vegetables), a protein and a garnish/dressing.

    Below is a pic of the roasted avocado Buddha bowl we had last week. Sorry for the funny colour the sun was shining through the drawn curtain. Sorry I cannot get the pic to load in anything other that large format and that throws the thread out and is annoying for people. So is the description ok?;

It contains millet, beetroot, carrot, tomato, spinach with onion & garlic, roasted avocado a creamy bean dressing (actually vegan believe it or not) and topped with sesame seeds and fresh coriander. To answer Booksand pieces question, yes the avocado was roasted without its skin and cut into quarters - lightly oiled and you get a tiny bit of avocado flavoured oil in the bottom of the roasting tin.

Right, I am in the middle of preparing dinner so I'm going to disappear for a while. I'll try and be back to answer any other queries and thank the other visitors to the thread today.

I do hope you know how much you are all appreciated.

    Evening All

I've just caught up on the last few days as I had a nuisance summer cold so been resting. Came back to life to find everyone has been having a right laugh.

Started the yoghurt last night and had a jug full of lovely tasting yoghurt this morning. Since I worked with stats in a previous life here is the number crunching. I use dried skimmed milk for convenience (live alone so I please myself). A pack from S'bobs is £1.01 giving 6.5pts. My vacuum jug holds about 0.75pts but I make up 0.75pt using the quantity for a pint. The jug gives me the equivalent of 500gm size of yoghurt so I get 6.5 large yoghurts for £1.01 plus 2 dsp of value yoghurt as starter. Very delish and very MSE.

Also made 2 doz bread rolls using value flour - have noticed Tosco have put it up from 45p to 65p but L*dl Al*i haven't increased yet.

    Is the bowl full yet?

  • Evening all,

Thanks everyone for giving me a laugh this afternoon - it was definitely needed! And thanks Greying for clearing up the Buddha bowl mystery (and giving me the impetus to watch the Rick Stein programme on the i-player tonight. Anything that features Indian Food and the Dalai Lama has got to be good!) Your Buddha bowl sounds yummy - and so much better than "bottom of the fridge risotto/curry/pasta"!

I'm having a bit of a wobbly at the moment. I'm being made redundant in just over 9 weeks and whilst I know we will manage, it hits me every so often: especially when OH's mobile phone (cheap and cheerful PAYG) and our rotary drier both died yesterday:( Oh well, I've got a job application in (if I get it it'll be a grade higher than my current post. Trouble is I've applied for two similar jobs in the last couple of years - and come second each time); I've use Amazon vouchers from surveys to pay for a new phone and, best of all, I went to the library to pick up my shiney new book.

I managed a NSD today and figured with the freezer plus the veg patch (courgettes anyone?) I should get away with just fruit and milk buying this week.

Oops - another waffle, and the only liquid to pass my lips so far this evening is several cups of tea ;).

    Have a good evening everyone.

Gosh, I really don't know where to start.

Booksandpieces I hope that you have some idea of what a Buddha bowl is now. I like to layer the bowl, starting with the grain, lay the veg on top, then the protein and top off with the dressing/garnish - but I'm quite sure it doesn't matter how you do it :D. I hope you have a go. Thank you for dropping by and I hope that you will visit again.

    Beanie - Thank you. :D

Pippi - Hello :hello: Thank you for dropping by. I'll be over to 'yours' later - I have a question :)

Shovel Lad - Thank you so much for obviously giving us all such a laugh. I can see you have a talent for finding the perfect illustration - well done. You have also reminded me that I am [STRIKE]ancient[/STRIKE] old enough to remember the 'Country Life' butter men, the first time around (see they've been brought back into circulation). I greatly appreciate your contribution to the thread. Thank you.

Upsidedown Bear - Thank you for contributing to the thread too - very amusing :D

Mint1955 - welcome to the thread - and thank you for saying what we all would of done if we weren't spluttering tea all over our keyboards! I hope you too will visit again.

CUL8R - whoop! You made yoghurt ?????:D Wowsers. I am impressed with your number crunching - that does prove that it is :money:to make your own doesn't it. Plus, perhaps I'm weird in this, I enjoy the process. I hope that cold pootles off quick smart and you feel better. Yes, I'd noticed the flour prices too - the MD of Tosco was on the news today warning of food price rises.........

7 Week Wonder - so you've been 2nd twice before - well, third time the interviewers see sense and they make you their First choice. You're clearly capable of the role and who knows what the teeny, tiny difference was between 1st and 2nd. You go and claim it this time. And don't wobble on your ownsome. You come here and Shovel Lad will get you laughing again.

Yes, the interview with the Dalai Lama was good, plus there were extra bits on the 'red button'. I have to say though, I was going to initially reply to Booksandpieces saying it's a posh term for 'leftovers':rotfl:

Right, I edited my previous post because I cannot get the avocado Buddha bowl pic to load in small format.

I will try with tonight's version, but (typical) it is not as good a view of the layering. :(

This is tonight's dinner. The eagle eyed amongst you will immediately spot that I forgot the dressing. Sorry, I was rushing and was so keen to remember to put the home grown beetroot leaves on that I forgot the bean dressing.

Right, so although it's useless at showing the layers, this Buddha bowl, from the bottom up is; millet, minted beetroot salad, grated carrot, a version of vagareli makai (spicy sweetcorn), sliced tomato, a 1 egg omelette (sliced), beetroot micro leaves and toasted sesame seeds. It should of also had the lemony bean dressing, which tonight was made out of chickpeas, but normally I would try to use cannellini beans (got a load from AF).

Actually, all I wanted to do was show you how quickly the beetroot leaves had grown :D

Last witter from me this evening. ;)

Today has been extraordinary. The support on this thread.......well.

I've bought milk, and I'm off to make yoghurt now. I'm going to try without milk powder this time. Oh, and Booksandpieces I do intend (sometime) to have a go at making soy yoghurt. Apparently it can be done, and I have a friend with dairy intolerance, so it would be good to try to see if I could make it. This thread is spawning yoghurt - that is a good thing, right?

I haven't put any money in the key fund today, but the milk and 1 lemon I bought were budgeted for.

    The 3 things that I am grateful for today are;

    - Children's questions. Today it was me that was being interrogated. It's wonderful what is important to a 5 year old. :D

    - Libraries. I too was able to collect a requested book from my local library today.

    - YOU. Nuff said. :D

Thank you for reading and engaging.

  • When I grow up......

I want to be able to read one of Greyings posts without having to resort to google:rotfl:

Mind you, now I know what it is, vagareli makai does sound very nice! And on that note - I'm off to bed with a cup of mint tea and a hot date with Rick Stein and the Dalia Lama;)

    Good night all
