  • oh I am sorry to hear your bad news Greying. I am in a similar situation, heavy heavy rain this morning and water splashing over the guttering that's fallen off, down the side of the patio and the side gate and inside the garage and down the side passageway. it's completely shot. Luckily the bin man had just emptied the blue bin as the storage box I had put there was already overflowing. The bin's half full of water now (saves cleaning it out I guess). Like you guys I haven't managed to accrue an emergency fund although the hole in the roof worries me immensley and I don't know if It'll get through this winter.

I know it's really hard when life/situations blindside you, but I will just reiterate the words of 7WW: there will come a day when the small wins turn to bigger ones, and life doesn't get in the way.
    Wise words indeed.

Big hugs to you and yours (and anyone else who needs one)
  • Good Evening (again) :hello:

Thank you so very much for popping by and leaving such supportive comments - it was just the tonic I needed, that's for sure.

Shovel Lad - I did laugh out loud - shocking isn't it - you watch, it'll be the red ticker tape breaking news on the BBC :rotfl:Actually, the nuts were very nice. Glad I bought them now. Will have to see what dish I had planned to make with them mind, as I'll need another bag :D

DawnW - I think you have one of those washing machines from the era when they were well made. This machine is only 7 - maybe 8 years old and we've had more or less what you've had done to yours, done to ours plus a new drum! Ours is a Hotp0int, and if I had a pound for everytime I hear 'they're not as good as they used to be...' I wouldn't need a key fund, for certain :rotfl:

Beanie - supportive as ever. I need to cultivate the type of friends that change their white goods everytime they change their kitchens, because they 'don't match'. That would solve my problems eh?

7 Week Wonder - thank you. We're not too sure on the 'terminal' or 'may be resurrected with new parts'. DP is mechanically minded, and has wrought minor miracles before. However, It was such a faff - after a long day - draining the machine and trying to locate where bits were that meant tethers were beginning to be 'reached the end of'. Perhaps another look at it - with less water sloshing about - in plenty of daylight etc may reveal whether it can be saved. We do have sources of reconditioned machines here - actually I think the BHF charity shop do them (if they have stock, of course). That would still be a problem with lack of £'s - but you are absolutely right, there are several ways of getting a 'new' to us machine. I don't have any problem with secondhand, just a problem with finding the funding :D

We did indeed have sandwiches for dinner. Egg salad to be precise. The salad was homegrown and had transit miles of, oooh about 0.00012 :D and the egg was sliced with the new 'guillotine'. As I was layering up the sandwiches, I was immediately transported back to gran's cramped little kitchen, helping her make 'sangwitches' as she called them. The only difference being that I used wholemeal bread - I think she used white and the eggs tonight didn't have a massive grey ring around the yolk :rotfl:It is the little things isn't it?

I think we both feel a little bit better now that we've had something to eat and DP has had a cup of tea.

    On that note, the 3 things I am grateful for today are;

finding 5p - whilst bending down mopping the kitchen floor, I spied it, hiding under the fridge! Silver lining folks, silver lining :D

ASD*'s foodbank drive - ours had a trolley at the front of the store, despite not being on the list of stores collecting for Trussell Trust FB's, ours obviously collected at the weekend and the trolley was full/overflowing :T

Forumites - you know why - thank you :A

Well, I hope to be back in the morning.

Thank you for popping by, reading and for leaving lovely, supportive comments. If you've not figured out how much I appreciate it by now, then I'll keep mentioning it until you do :D

    See y'all later.

  • Good Evening again

Look folks, I was really concentrating, doing my best overwrought Oscar-esque acceptance speech of a thank you post and you've all run in, made hay and posted in the meantime!

BoB - how very kind of you - I think  The concept is fine, but given that pedal bins last for all of 2 seconds flat - do you think that that may be the weak point?? Plus, at a capacity of 2 pairs of pants and a sock - it may well prove vital to give up all other forms of work in order to wash clothes each week :rotfl:

As for the turnip recipes - what can I say? No, really what can I say???:rotfl::rotfl:Actually, I found a turnip recipe in a book of international vegetarian cuisine the other day. It is called 'Turnip Treat' (I kid you not) remind me to try it one day, so that I can share the recipe here :D

Beanie I hope the laptop is OK :)

miss empty piggy - thank you - sounds like you're having problems of your own? Hope you are feeling better and recovered from your fall?

    Thank you everyone.

I'm going now - see y'all in the morning.

  • Good Morning :hello:

Right, a plan has been formulated and DP is going to be in charge of investigating repair of the washing machine/calling out an engineer etc. I am going to be in charge of investigating the cost of a 'new to us' (in the widest variety of forms that that can take) machine. Then we'll compare notes, and worry about where the money will come from.

In the meantime, I'm probably going to have to undertake something that DawnW will be familiar with, and take my wet washing over to the non-gardening parental's house :rotfl:

So, back to today and saving pennies for the key fund...... Today is TV listings guide day. Will the same soap stars be on the front of the cheaper mag this week....eep, so exciting :p

I also need some kitchen roll. In fact I will need to have a re-look at my shopping list and menu planner to make sure that I don't miss to buy something that we need in the next day or so. However, spends should be low.

Oh, yesterday, I was going to tell you the 'good' news that my energy supplier had sent me the annual review and decided that we were £9 in credit (without taking meter readings?? odd) and that they are going to refund that money. They have also decided not to 'up' our DD, because they think that we will use the same amount next yr and any increase will come to less than £5pm so they won't up the DD - this is all new isn't it? Anyway, £9 is winging it's way to my bank account and can go into the key fund jar :T

I also bought some natural yoghurt from H*ron Foods - they had the one I like back in stock, and as it is 5p cheaper than supermarket value yoghurt, I saved money and got the yoghurt I like :T Still, the events of yesterday evening meant that I didn't make yoghurt strangely enough - so I ended up eating a little of the starter for breakfast this morning - not so :money: :o

I hope you all have a great day.

Thank you for popping by, reading and commenting. I greatly appreciate it.

    See y'all later.

Oh Beanie - you poor thing. Sending you healing vibes. Don't worry, Mr B will be telling everyone that he has folks 'fall at his feet' because of his allure/handsomeness/aftershave.....:rotfl: You take care!
