additional driver on my insurance???
Options
Hi everyone,
I would like to insure my sister in law on my car over the summer. She is 22, has been driving for 4 years, with no accidents, claims or penalty points. However, she has always been an additional person on her parents insurance, with her parents as the main driver.
i am 32, but have only been driving for 2 years, and until yesterday my husband was the main driver, i was the additional named driver. i am now the main driver on my own car. i had no claims or penalty points since i started driving.
If i got her insured on my car, I would still be the main driver.
i asked how much it would be to insure her for the year, and it was going to double my insurance to 1300, so didn't.
Just wondered is it possible to insure her for just 2 months?
Any ideas much appreciated

Do you pay monthly?
If so, just add her to your policy. Pay the increased premium for 2 months. then take her off and your premium will drop back down.0 -

Dont forget they will add admin charges to add then remove. So ask if they can specifically add them for just the 2 months or whatever.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

short term insurance tends to be more expensive. The problem is your sister in laws age, anyone under 25 pays a higher premium regardless of driving experience to someone who is say 30 with the same experience.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Yes, you can specify any period, normally down to a minimum of 7 days. Just phone them up and say you'd like to add her as a named driver between certain dates. It shouldn't bump it up THAT much.
I got my 18 year old cousin insured on my car for a week when I was giving him some "pass plus" style driving tuition, just so he could experience something with a bit more performance than his 1.1 106. It only cost about £45 or something - not that I'd want to pay that pro-rata for the year!0 -
I take it you are still with your husband but just have your own car?
If so can I suggest you try adding him as an additional driver too and see what happens? It *may* cause your insurance to come down even further. Insurance quotes are based on statistics and having a spouse on the policy statistically make you less of a risk. (family to take care of etc etc.)
Likewise, adding you to his insurance as a named driver may cause that to drop as well. We both have our own cars but adding each other causes the policy to drop by about 20%0 -
You can add her as a temporary additional driver to your policy. You may find your insurers have a maximum term for a single person and so you may end up having to do two occasions back to back, of cause each attracting an admin fee.
Before you actually buy it though check what the price of a standalone temporary policy is, it may or may not be cheaper and that way it also doesnt risk your NCD/ claims history0
