Will cancelling my debit card stop this payment? What are my rights?

Hi,

I bought some cheap theatre tickets over the phone yesterday for a very popular show that is ending soon. They said that they would email me the confirmation of payment which I have received. I was also expecting to receive my tickets in a separate email, but nothing has come through. I have tried to call them and leave them emails, but no reply. I then looked for reviews of this company online, and lots of people saying they never received their tickets from them and that they are a scam.

I have checked my account online, and the money is not showing as being taken out yet. I now want to buy the tickets with a reputable ticket seller. Therefore, I phoned my bank and reported my card lost. I asked them if they will be able to stop any payments that haven't been taken out of my account yet, but they said anything that was authorised before today, will still be taken out. I have since written them an email too, reconfirming I would like all payments that haven't left my card to be stopped.

I really want this transaction stopped so I can buy the tickets from somewhere else ASAP. Does anyone know what my rights are in this situation? As I have told the bank not to take the money out of my account, can they really still let this go through? I would like to buy these tickets from somewhere else ASAP before they sell out, so really confused.

Many thanks,

Enney

speak to your bank and advise them of exactly what your concerns are rather than trying to block it in a roundabout way!...

Did you check the "available balance" on the bank account? That will take into account transactions that have been authorised but not yet posted on the account - so you by finding the difference between the statement balance and the available balance, you can determine how much money is in the "pipeline".

Once a transaction has been authorised, there's nothing you can do to stop them receiving the money. Cancelling the card won't help.

However, IF the transaction does go through, AND they do breach the contract (i.e. by not sending you the tickets) you can ask your bank to reverse the transaction.

If they take the money and DO send you the tickets, you'll be in a tricky position. You could well end up stuck with the tickets unless they offer a cancellation policy.

You cannot cancel a payment once you have authorized it, while it is still pending. Think about it: anyone could go to Tesco, pay by card, walk away with the food, then cancel the payment, so they have got the food for free.

If you do not receive the tickets, get in touch with your bank. Although it was a Debit Card you paid with (which has far less protection than a Credit Card), the bank might be able to get your money back.

Chances are your bank account will be debited, and if you don't receive the tickets you'll have to apply for a chargeback, which the company you bought the tickets from may or may not contest. Its too soon to assume they will not send them and you can't cancel the transaction by reporting your card lost.

You can't stop this transaction. Using a debit card is like cash really. As others have said though, if you have the money taken from your account and don't receive the tickets you can then raise that with the bank.

Why do people lie to their bank.....

If they do not turn up there is a chargeback right. But it cannot be actioned till the day after the event.

Just do not have the thought that if it debits you then claim its fraud...
IT WILL come back with your details on and you would be redebited. As well as losing any right to claim the money back if the goods do not arrive.

It's best to do your research before a purchase. You sound like you have buyer's remorse and looking for someone else to fund your mistake.

You have rights if the tickets don't appear. Until then you have the obligation to pay.
