Direct Debit Problem

Hello

BT have taken the wrong payment out of my account by direct debit. I rang them when i noticed the error and they advised me to claim the money back from my bank under the direct debit guarantee which states that the customer is entitled to an immediate refund. I contacted my bank and they have told me at least 48hrs for a refund. Are they right or am i right to ask for the refund to be credited to my account immedietly?

Unfortunately, 48 hours is "immediate" for a bank.

When I rang A&L they told me that the amount that had been taken via unauthorised DD from my account was "very small" and not worth filling in forms for. They told me that the person taking the DD could refund it back to me quicker than going through the forms process with the bank.

It's been a week now and still no refund that was promised so will be chasing it up with the bank and making them fill in forms for my 84p!!!

Its the principle of it. They have gone against the guarantee and taken money they are not entitled to take.

That is what I would have thought.

I always understood the DD guarantee was for when you were in dispute with the firm taking the money; when they were in complete agreement with you that they had overcharged you, I understood it was incumbent on them to correct matters?

I thought so too. But the guy said to wait and see if I get a refund from the person who took it in error. Guess he couldn't be bothered to fill in the forms.

But I complained again to the insurance company that took the money and they have promised me a £5 credit for their mistake as they promised a refund and still haven't done it (apparently it is below the minimum refund limit they can action) ;)
