If the solicitor asks me to come in next week and "sign the documents" does this mean exchange contracts?0

No, it's a preparatory stage before exchange. You sign the paperwork and your solicitor holds on to it until both sides are ready to exchange. The seller's solicitor does the same thing with the seller.
When everything is ready, each solicitor does a final check with their client that they are happy to proceed, they agree a completion date, and then exchange happens - verbally (by phone). The documents then get sent to the other solicitor at leisure.0 -
