Old terracotta chimney pots look lovely planted with trailing petunias etc.
Also, depending how quirky you like your planters, I have seen an old loo pan re-employed as a planter - looked quite impressive stuffed with geraniums!

I've just got loads from Ikea 28cm inside diameter for £1.79 each.
