Salary required to get a credit card with more than £500 credit available?

Patience is not my strong point! Gave Nationwide a bell and in less than 16 minutes we ran through it on the phone and I've been accepted for a 0% purchases for 6 months credit card, 15.9% APR with a credit limit of £1200 (I asked for it to be this down from the £1800 it was giving as the max I could ask for).
Really pleased, just got to wait for paperwork in the post and I'll be on my way! Thank you very much for all your posts, very happy GoldenShadow0 -

Why not. You would just the same protection on your debit card as the credit.
Many people get stuck on CCA as the only protection.
Chargebacks are available to cover most cases and these will be used if there is a right.
Gentoo365. Makes a totally valid point. In effect you can make a 1p transaction on your credit card and the rest on another payment method. Which you can prove... to have CCA cover.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -

I'm glad you're pleased I personally would've been devasted spending 16 mins on the phone to walk away with a £1200 credit limit.0 -

I don't know how easy it is to pay 1p and then the rest on another card, I guess its not an option online and you'd have to call up (V tickets vanish in minutes). I can keep an eye on a balance on my credit card whereas when I buy something on my debit it just gets swallowed into my overdraft. Because that's interest free its quite easy to just use it as free money and max it out and keep it maxed out. Knowing I get interest on a CC makes me care more about clearing it! Also helpful just having more funds available for the dog as well0 -

A £1200 limit on an income of £6k is quite high really, almost 2 and a half months earnings. Sounds like Golden is quite sensible in keeping the limit down as well.
Golden,
I'm 99% sure HSBC would not have increased your limit above £500. The person who posted above may have a standard credit card rather than a student one (it can happen, if the card was taken out before it became a student account).
That Nationwide card is a good choice - Low rate and decent limit, you should be pleased!
Have fun at V, I'll be missing it this year0
