For his birthday, why not an "IOU" in his card, promising to take him out for a lovely meal with your first paycheque?
I'm sure he must understand you are a bit strapped at the moment, and it will be something for you both to look forward to.Bossymoo

No one would mind waiting a month for their birthday meal. Have a look if any vouchers would suit, i.e. Prezzo or Ask. (We don't live very close to most of those chains, so it's a treat for me, but only when away somewhere.) Homemade birthday cake is a lovely idea. An IOU for a back massage or something ruder depending on your physical terms? I honestly think that men have a different attitude to gifts than women. It's nice you got them a present. It's great it's useful. It's amazing how you got just what they wanted, how did you know that? It's like you paid attention or something...
Pancakes are great as a filling dessert, too, meaning you can have a lighter main meal to leave room?
Maybe a spanish omelette, everything you have i.e. leftover potatoes, cheese, tomatoes, ham and especially eggs, for a picnic? Beans on toast is seriously one of my favourite meals. My sister's is egg and chips.0
