new job :) but £0 for over a month

Hi I'm new to the forums.

I have finally got a full time contracted job yay!

But until I get paid I have very little to no money, I am doing a car boot on Sunday and hoping to make some cash there but I need some advice on how else to get money as still have bills and food to pay for. I have no gold or silver left, I can't get loan as my credit is very bad, my family are in financial difficulties too and after car boot I have nothing else to sell.
To make things worse it's my partners birthday Monday, I have done some upcycled/ handmade gifts for him but I would like to take him for a meal too.

Any ideas or help would be great.

Far better cooking a nice meal in rather than taking him out.

Price to go out will probably feed you half a dozen meals.

Can the job centre help at all

Ask your new employer for an advance.

Do you not have any savings,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • You could ask to be refered to a food bank.

    Welcome to the forum kizzy.

From what you have said in your post, you really can't afford a meal out at the moment and in your situation where you still have bills and other food to pay for, it would be madness to waste what cash you have on a meal out.

If I was you I'd do as McKneff suggested and put some effort into cooking his favourite meal at home. You can always give him an IOU for a meal out together once you can afford it if you feel the need.

If you want links to threads with cheap meals post in here to let me know.

  • Thank you to everyone that's replied so far.

The job centre says they can't help and as I had a emergency loan from them less than 6 months ago I can't have another one.

And I'd feel guilty using a food bank until it was completely last resort, I know how many family's in my area really need that service.

I think your all right about the meal out, lucky his favorite food is pancakes so that's one cheap meal he will love.

If anyone has any cheap meal ideas that would be great. And any alternatives to house cleaning sprays extra.

Don't feel bad about the food bank. Once you're been paid you could make a donation for the next family that needs it.

Are you into baking? A nice home made birthday cake would be a real treat.

Surely your partner can help you out for the first month.
You haven't said whether he lives with you or not.

And financial difficulties or not, I would be seeing to it that my daughter had food in her cupboard or came to eat with us for a month each night for a month.

    Good luck with the budgeting.

It's a bit difficult to give advice without knowing what you already have in the house. For cleaning stuff, if you have washing up liquid it can be diluted to do most cleaning jobs. If you can manage a bottle of bleach as well you are more or less sorted. If you have vinegar you are laughing - there is loads of info about cheap cleaning in these forums.

As for food - it's down to the minimum and absolutely basic stuff. Make as much as you can, and have time for, from scratch and jacket potatoes are filling, nutritious and you can put most things on or with them. Porridge is terrific and very cheap if you get Value oats. Do not get ONE thing that you can possibly do without.

A month must seem a long time as it stretches in front of you but it will pass and every day under your belt is a day less to survive.
You can do this. And if you don't take out any sort of loan you'll have nothing to pay back.

Good Luck and keep in touch.

    Oh - and Welcome.

Whats 30 days huh? ;) Light at the end of the tunnel. Yes it's going to be really difficult but only for the short term now. Well done on the job!

Yes, baked beans will be your friend. Beans on toast quite nutritious and filling. I also find weetabix (aldi/basic brand) are a super fillers. You could invest in powdered milk for the month. Yes it's watery in comparison but means you can make more meals and have more snack opportunities. Tinned fruit, even the stuff in syrup thats a lot cheaper than in juice, it will get you some fruit without having to part with pounds, just pence. Tinned fish/tuna/sardines/mackerel - all pence to buy. Value pasta is around 20p and a huge bag of value rice is 40p. You can flavour rices with stock cubes, again value are around 12p. Tinned rice pudding is around 15p as are boil up noodles.

For 30 days you can do it! I hope you can manage to scrape a bit for some of the above but honestly, please, please, please try to get that food bank referral. I agree with above, you can pay it back by the shopping bag loadful when you get paid :)
  • Just to give a bit more info I do live with my mum who is disabled. Just got the letter today saying she is fit for work and she is appealing it. Just a little more stress to add to things.

My partner doesn't live with me but he does help when he can but he helps his family alot too.

Thank you everyone for your ideas. I've been given a massive bag of pasta and rice which is going to help a lot.
