Pregnant Student!

Hi, I'm Holly.

I've just passed my second year of university & have discovered that I'm pregnant and due mid way through my third year.

I currently have no income, only the little bit left of my April finance payment, I have to pay back a £1000 overdraft if I am going to defer for a year. Although I will get less help than of I quit?

I also have to get a deposit together to move out by October with my partner who earns £180 a week but still pays rent at his mums house.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do next or if I would be entitled to anything. Any help appreciated.

Check on the turn2us calculator. Likely you will get child tax credits and child benefit when child is born, and possibly maternity allowance - check with benefits office first.
  • Adoption.

I look at my children and realise it is now too late to give them up for adoption :(
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.
  • Hello Holly,

I'd strongly advise popping into/calling the student funding unit at your uni (not to be confused with Student Finance England).I have just finished my degree, and have one child, and I have found them really helpful and supportive throughout. Every year they receive Government funds to support students to remain in education. You may have heard of it called 'hardship' or 'access to learning' funds? All students can apply, but certain groups are prioritised, including parents. All awards they make are means tested, but they can award up to £3500 per year which you are not expected to repay. I believe you may still be eligible if you defer for a year too.

As the others say try the turn to us calculator

    Good luck

...or of course you could just embrace your pregnancy, accept that the baby will now come first, and put your studies on hold until you can afford to go back to them.
