Car Insurance: TPFT cheaper than TP?

A possible tip for someone looking for third party only car insurance. Try adding Fire and Theft, it may be cheaper!

I'm getting quotes for renewing my car insurance. I have an oldish low value car, I'm low risk, full no claims etc, live in a very low risk area, very low mileage etc. I only want Third Party cover. Cheapest quote is about £97. Not bad, I thought.

One quote site allowed me to easily tweak my input, so I tried TPFT. Cheapest quote dropped to about £85, and the same sort of decrease appears to be consistent across all insurers.

Could someone explain why TPFT is cheaper than TP?
