Limescale?

how do i prevent limescale from building up? i know i can descale my kettle & shower head seperately, but is there something i can put into the hot water tank?

my in laws say use a magnet, but i don't know what that means.

We struggled with this problem for 30 years, tried all sorts of things and then gave in and bought a water softener. Wonderful! Best buy we ever made. I think the magnet refers to devices that can be clamped to the incoming water pipe which are claimed to do something to the calcium and magnesium salts to keep them in suspension. Never tried one of these as I read so many accounts of them not being effective.
