Over what period did the overpayment occur?
A few pounds a month over many years is totally different to getting an additional £1,600 in a single month. If it is the latter the "poor at maths" is absolutely no excuse. If the former, it is perfectly understandable that it would be relatively easy to miss.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -

Yes, she has to pay it back and luckily for you both she can make an offer - the fairest would be to pay it back over the same length of time that she received it. So, if they have been overpaying for six months she should offer to repay it over six months.
