A: Sir Edward Elgar (I think :) )

Win tickets to see Gergiev conduct the LSO

The London Symphony Orchestra’s principal conductor Valery Gergiev will conduct two formidable Russian works – with a bit of French in between – at London’s Barbican Hall on June 14, at 7.30pm.

Prokofiev composed his terrifying October Cantata for massive forces including double mixed chorus, military band, accordions and orchestra. Politically as well as musically fascinating, the Cantata depicts the October Revolution of 1917. Tenor Andrei Ilyushnikov is the “voice of Lenin”.

Also on the programme is Stravinsky's ballet Les Noces, a depiction of a Russian peasant wedding scored for voices, four pianos and percussion.

Between the two, Debussy’s Premiere Rhapsody is an emotional journey though moods, shadows and jazz-inspired shades, performed by LSO principal clarinettist Andrew Marriner.
