Has anyone got a recommendation for an outdoor heater (and I'm not talking thermal underwear and a bobble hat.)

There's so much choice.

First up, we have the ...er... I've no idea how you spell it. Chimenea? Chiminia? The clay pot stove thingey. Or sometimes it's in cast-iron that rusts if it's not covered. You know the one.

Then there's the gas guzzling, ungreen, carbon-emitting patio heaters, so beloved of the cafes and pubs in these parts. A lot of garden centres have stopped selling them.

Next up, we have the fire basket. (Asda is selling one for 35 pounds, I see.)

Or I could follow my friend's example and dig a fire pit. He dug a huge hole in the lawn, built a make-shift grate and made a fire. As simple as that.
 His wife was not very pleased, but it's very cosy when he works in the garden during the winter, or when they have summer nights in.

Are there any of you that regret your purchase? Are there any of you who feel that the outdoor fire has been a good investment?

Where do I start? Should I start?

Something to consider when choosing outdoor heating not just for your self but your neigbours...a friend has just errected a polytunnel and it now has ventilation caused by sparks from a Chimenea.

We have and use regularly throughout the summer a cast-iron chiminea. It is stored undercover during the cold months.

I would recommend that any outdoor fire structure that you buy or use has a reasonably tall chimney or else you will find yourself sitting in the smoke from it. Better if the chimmey lifts the smoke above the heads of those sitting around it. Our best use is to light it just as the bbq food is done - great way to dispose of the chicken bones - just pop them in the chiminea, paper plates and napkins follow. Voila - everyone fed and no washing up - that's my kind of cooking!

Thanks for the tip about the chimney, having spent a night sat in the smoke from a fire pit and it taking days for the smell to completely wash out of my hair I can vouch that the smoke from a fire pit is indeed unpleasant. I will be looking to get a cast iron chiminea at some point this summer then.

We got out cast iron chimnea earlier this year from Woolies it was a good buy compared with ones I seen now. We haven't used it yet though but we do store it in a old garage. EDIT it was £29.99 when we got it in April and still is, they wont delivery for store collection now but did then.

It is great - we borrowed one from a friend for a party and we are looking to get our own. It is bigger than the one posted above. They also do it in black too.
