credit ratings- improvement

hi all,
so I think I got a bad credit rating, I applied for an asda credit card and got rejected. Not sure why, I dont think i have any other lines of credit and all my bills/direct debits etc are paid on time and in full. I do have contents insurance that I pay monthly for and this company tell me its a form of credit but it does not show up on my equifax check for some reason.
Anyway, I wanted to ask advice on how to fix my ratings becuase very soon I want to try to apply for car finance and I want to have the best chance of succeeding,
Im aware of getting into a rejection spiral but I am going to gamble and apply for some form of card as if accepted I know I will use it sensibly and repay in full each month without fail- so I think doing this will imporve my score.
What is the best type of card to go for? Do I got for a high percentage credit card or is store card like argos for example better.
Or another option, is brighthouse, pay as you view etc a good idea to improve my rating.
hope someone can help
thanks for reading, have a good night

The Argos card is underwritten by Vanquis, a lender that gives high APR and caters to people with less of a credit rating. As you have not much of a history, you aren't going to get prime rates until you build something up.Oh, you wee bazza!0
